How Often Do You Read Your Bible?

In a recent study conducted by Lifeway Research, you can see why christendom is in such shambles today. We have all sorts of terrible error in what passes as christianity today. From ecumenism, to emergent spirituality, to contemplative prayer and the list goes on. We have a small glimpse as to why most christians are so misguided today. Below is a quote from the article:

The survey found 90 percent of churchgoers agree “I desire to please and honor Jesus in all I do,” and 59 percent agree with the statement: “Throughout the day I find myself thinking about biblical truths.” While the majority agree with both statements, there is a significant difference in the strength of agreement. Nearly two-thirds of churchgoers (64 percent) strongly agree with the first statement, but only 20 percent strongly agree with the second.

However, when asked how often they personally (not as part of a church worship service) read the Bible, a similar number respond “Every Day” (19 percent) as respond “Rarely/Never” (18 percent). A quarter indicate they read the Bible a few times a week. Fourteen percent say they read the Bible “Once a Week” and another 22 percent say “Once a Month” or “A Few Times a Month.”

From the first line in the quote above, we somehow have 10% of so called protestants that disagree with the statement that pretty much defines what being a christian is. If you do not desire to please Jesus in all you do, how on earth can you call yourself a christian?

Then we have 41% who do not find themselves thinking of biblical truths throughout their day. This makes sense, seeing that we have only 19% that read their bible everyday.

This study only polled slightly under 3,000 people, but this is a good cross section as to how biblically strong our country really is.

The fact that we have so many “christians” falling for ecumenism, or flocking to a new age Glenn Beck or apologizing for homosexuality, we can see that very few actually read their bible. People follow what others tell them via some media outlet, Hollywood pop tart, or some newspaper. With the volume of nonsense that is spouted off from our various media sources, biblically illiterate christians start to adopt the opinions of others.

Compounded with the lack of true christianity, we have a glut of perverted “bibles” to choose from. We now have gender neutral bibles, the message (complete new age), NIV, etc… The only bible that has maintained the gospel unadulterated is the King James Bible. I will quote some scriptures later on that have been either removed or changed to fit more of a new age direction. In fact, after having the KJB for more that 400 years, we now have bibles that have over 64,000 changes made in them. These changes are in the name of so called “higher criticism”, but are really from a string of men and women that have an agenda to remove you from God’s true word. This is a long story with a lot of interesting points to consider, so I can’t really explain it all in this article. If you are interested leave a comment, and I’ll give you some resources to do your own homework.

Why should you read your bible every day?

Here are a few biblical reasons to read your bible as much as you can, daily.

Psalms 12:6-7

6The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

7Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

God’s word are pure. He also made the effort to preserve his infallible words forever. He did this so that you could learn and grow and become a strong, saved, christian. This verse has been bastardized in all modern versions.

Psalm 138:2

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

God has exalted his word above his own name. This shows you the importance God has placed on his word.

2 Timothy 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

The scriptures are useful. The first thing mentioned is for doctrine, the very thing most professing christians are ignorant of. Reading the bible is not an option for those who fear the Lord.

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

God commands us to study. He calls us workman, which indicates we much work on this study so that we will not be ashamed. Rightly dividing the word of truth is impossible without it.

These are but a few examples, there are many, many more to show you why the word of God is so vital to our lives on this fallen planet.

In conclusion, my admonition is that you do not let false teachers like Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, Rob Bell, Billy Graham, Todd Bentley or others, misdirect you on your own spiritual life. It is incumbent upon yourself to read the scriptures and let God reveal what he has to teach you. The bible is a spiritually discerned book and by digging for truth in the actual pages, God will reveal truth from heresy.
